Don't scan unknown QR Codes

J2 Software’s team are often speaking to people about the seemingly innocuous yet potentially dangerous practice of scanning QR codes. Sure, in modern digitally connected society these convenient shortcuts appear everywhere - from restaurant menus, parking structures to product packaging. However, it’s crucial to recognise that not all QR codes are created equal and the cyber criminals exploit our trust in the QR code to steal from us.
Cybercriminals have been increasingly exploiting QR codes to lure unsuspecting users into a web of malicious activities. When you scan a QR code, you may unwittingly grant access to harmful websites, download malware, or even expose sensitive personal information. Unlike traditional links, QR codes offer no visible cues about their destination, making it all too easy to fall victim to a scam.
To protect yourself, consider these tips:
- Verify the Source: Only scan QR codes from trusted sources. If a code looks suspicious or is in a public place, think twice before scanning. The same goes for codes in restaurants or bars, check that there has been nothing placed on top of the original code.
- Use a Secure Scanner: Find a secure method that previews the link before you engage, so you can assess the safety of the destination.
- Check for HTTPS: If the link directs you to a website, ensure it starts with https://—this indicates a more secure connection. Once you reach the website, if it does not act in the way it should in any way, get out of there.
- Be Wary of Personal Info Requests: Legitimate sites typically don’t ask for sensitive information like passwords or credit card numbers through QR codes. Be ultra aware.
- Keep Your Software Updated: Ensure your device’s operating system and security software are up-to-date to protect against vulnerabilities. A layered cyber resilience program is essential as all aspects of the program work together.
Remember, cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility. By staying informed and vigilant, we can mitigate the risks associated with QR code scanning and ensure that convenience doesn’t come at the cost of our security. Let’s prioritise awareness and adopt safe scanning practices—because a moment’s oversight can lead to lasting consequences. Stay safe out there!
